The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the Twenty20 professional cricket league in India featuring eight teams each year in March or April and May, representing eight different cities in India. The league was founded by the Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI) in 2008. IPL has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Program.

The IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world and in 2014 ranked sixth in average attendance of all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL became the first sporting event in the world to be broadcast live on YouTube. IPL's brand value in 2019 was £ 475 billion ($ 6.7 billion), according to Duff & Phelps. According to the BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed £ 11.5 billion ($ 160 million) to India's GDP.

The IPL has been running for twelve seasons. The current IPL title holders are the Mumbai Indians who won the 2019 season. The 2020 season location has been rescheduled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; Now the games will be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 19 to November 10.

History of IPL

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was founded in 2007 with financial support from Zee Entertainment Enterprises. The ICL was not recognized by the Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI) or the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the BCCI was not happy that its committee members joined the ICL executive board. To discourage players from joining the ICL, the BCCI increased the prize money in their own domestic tournaments and also imposed lifelong bans on players joining the ICL, which the board regarded as a rebel league.

The tournament format for IPL

Currently, with eight teams, each team plays each other twice in a round-robin at home and away in the league stage. At the end of the league stage, the top four teams will advance to the playoffs. The top two teams in the league phase will play against each other in the first qualifying match, with the winner going straight to the IPL Final and the loser with another chance to advance to the IPL Finals by playing the second qualifying match. Meanwhile, the third and fourth-placed teams in the league phase play each other in a knockout match, and the winner of that match will play against the loser in the first qualifying match. The winner of the second qualifying match will advance to the final to play against the winner of the first qualifying match in the IPL final match, where the winner will be crowned the champions of the Indian Premier League.

Player acquisition, team composition, and salaries in IPL

A team can acquire players in any of three ways: an annual player auction, exchange of players with other teams during trade windows, and signing a replacement for unavailable players. Players register for the auction and also set their base price and are bought by the franchise offering them the highest bids. Players unsold at the auction have the right to subscribe to replacements. In trading windows, the player can trade only with his consent, while the franchisee pays the difference between the old and new contracts if any. If the new contract costs more than the old one, the difference is divided between the player and the franchise selling the player. There are usually three trading windows - two before the auction and one after the auction, but before the tournament starts. Players cannot be traded outside of trading windows or during a tournament, whereas substitutions can be signed before or during a tournament.

Here are some of the squad rules (as of the 2020 season):

  1. The squad must be between 18 and 25 players, with a maximum of 8 foreign players.
  2. The maximum salary for an entire team must not exceed £ 850 million (the US $ 12 million).
  3. Players under the age of 19 cannot be selected if they have not previously played first-class cricket or List A cricket.
  4. A team can play with a maximum of 4 foreign players when they play eleven.

The player's contract is valid for one year, with the franchise having the option to extend the contract for one or two years. Since the 2014 season, players' contracts have been nominated in Indian rupees, and before that contracts were in US dollars. Players from overseas can receive rewards in the currency of the player's choice at the exchange rate on the date of the contract or the actual date of payment. Prior to the 2014 season, local players from India were not included in the player auction pool and could be subscribed by franchises for a discrete amount, while a fixed amount from 1 million AMD (14,000 USD) to 3 million Rupees (42,000 USD ) could be deducted for the subscription from the franchise salary. This met with strong opposition from franchise owners, who complained that the richer franchises were “luring players in with closed deals,” after which the IPL decided to include local players in the player auction.

According to a 2015 poll by Sporting Intelligence and ESPN The Magazine, the IPL's prorated average salary is $ 4.33 million per year, which is the second-highest among all sports leagues in the world. Since IPL players are only contracted for the duration of the tournament (less than two months), the weekly IPL salaries are extrapolated pro rata to generate the average annual salary, unlike other sports leagues where players are contracted with one team. for the whole year.

Match rules for IPL

IPL games use television timeouts and therefore there is no time limit within which teams must complete their innings. However, a penalty may be imposed if the referees find that the teams are abusing this privilege. Each team is given a two and a half minute “strategic timeout” during each inning; one must be taken by the bowling team between the ends of the 6th and 9th overs and the other by the team hitting the ball between the ends of the 13th and 16th overs.

Since the 2018 season, all IPL matches have used a referee review system, giving each team one chance to review the referee's decision per inning.

Prize money in IPL

For the 2019 IPL season, a total prize pool of £ 500 million ($ 7.0 million) was offered, and the winning team's net profit was £ 200 million ($ 2.8 million). The first and second place runners-up won 125 million won ($ 1.8 million) and £ 87.5 million ($ 1.2 million) respectively, the fourth-placed team also won 87.5 million pounds sterling (1.2 million US dollars). The rest of the teams do not receive prize money. According to IPL rules, half of the prize money must be distributed among the players.

Brand value

Tournament value grew rapidly during 2016-18, as evidenced by a series of price spikes from season to season. The IPL as a whole was valued by financial experts at $ 4.16 billion in 2016, but that figure rose to $ 5.3 billion in 2017 and $ 6.13 billion in 2018. The Duff and Phelps report says this is one of the factors behind the rapid growth. The values of the Indian Premier League was to sign a new TV deal with Star India Private Limited, which attracted more viewers due to the fact that the IPL was broadcast on regional channels in 8 different languages, rather than the previous deal, in which programs are limited to sports networks with commentary in English. The report also said the game continued to recover from recent controversy, stating: “This IPL season has attracted attention for all the right reasons thanks to a relatively free tournament coupled with some brilliant on-pitch performances that brought it back to attention. ... game "

Following the completion of the 2017 Indian Premier League, IPL business value rose 37% to a record $ 5.3 billion, crossing the $ 5 billion mark for the first time in a season, according to another independent report by London-based Brand Finance. According to the director of the company: “The Indian Premier League, 11th season, should stay. The league has produced financial results for players, franchisees, sponsors, and India in general, which has generated a strong desire from a number of stakeholders to evaluate it properly. To ensure continuous development, management and team owners will need to explore innovative ways to attract fans, clubs, and sponsors.

On their own, estimates of individual franchises vary, with the most valuable teams being the Mumbai Indians ($ 113 million) and the Kolkata Knight Riders ($ 104 million). Other franchises cited in the report ranged in value from $ 43 million (Rajasthan Royals) to Chennai Super Kings ($ 98 million).

Sponsorship Dispute

The 2020 IPL VIVO has been heavily criticized for retaining Chinese sponsors for the 2020 IPL, even amid calls for a boycott of Chinese goods, even as the 2020 Sino-Indian clashes still continued. Omar Abdullah and Randip Singh Surjewala criticized the decision of the BCCI / IPL governing board to retain Chinese sponsors. Swadeshi Jagran Manch, a subsidiary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated that the Chinese company VIVO should not participate in IPL VIVO 2020.
